Scott Pilgrim vs the World (Edgar Wright, 2010)

A pink-haired girl named Ramona, standing back to back with a boy in a red t-shirt, Scott Pilgrim. Behind them pictures of her seven evil exes.

What's it about? Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a nerdy-but-cool teenager who meets the girl of his dreams, but must first defeat her seven evil exes in battle in order to win her hand.

Is it any good? Some really fun and funny stuff going on here, even if it feels like an extended episode of Wright's cult TV show Spaced, with similar surreal fantasy sequences and videogame sensibilities. Pity the central story revolves around  the intensely irritating Scott Pilgrim and the drippy object of his affections, Ramona. I'm sure I wasn't the only one that wanted the World to win. Still, the rest of the cast, particularly Kieran Culkin, are good value.

I don't trust you. What do others think? US audiences didn't know what to make of it and it bob-bombed at the box office (that joke will only make sense if you've seen the film). If you're over 30, it'll probably make you feel old. Although I am and I liked it, so that means I'm down with the kids. Not in a sleazy way, I hasten to add.

Anything else I should know? If you're bored with the plot, pass the time looking out for the numbers 1 to 7 that appear somewhere in the frame as each of the evil exes turn up.

What does the Fonz think? Pretty good. although it should have been called Scott Pilgrim < the World
